Scott,

In addition to this man's service in the 18th Indiana Infantry, he was also assigned to the 163rd Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps. This unit was organized at New Orleans, La., March 9, 1864. Mustered out by detachments July 18 to November 30, 1865.

Normally, membership in a VRC unit indicates wounding or disease to the soldier which prevented him from being able to perform his normal duties.

His widow, Elizabeth, applied for and received a pension in 1879. Interestingly enough, Thomas did NOT apply for a disability pension after the war. So his wound or illness that got him into the VRC appears to have not been bad enough to make him eligible for a disability pension, post-war.

I am "sure" his pension application includes his date and place of death.

You can obtain his service record and pension files through the link below. We have a new "Pension Packet", which is an abbreviated version of the Union Pension Application and available at an economical price.

With best regards,

Jim Martin
