Johnson, George, April 22, 1861 private, Company G, 8th Ind. Infantry Rgt. Aug. 6, 1861
mustered out at Indianapolis, Ind.

8th Ind. Infantry Rgt.
This regiment was organized for the three months' service at Indianapolis, in April, 1861 and mustered in April 25. It left the state on June 19 and moved to Clarksburg, WVa. then to Buckhannon, W. Va., where it was assigned to BrigGen. W. S. Rosecrans' brigade. It participated in the Juy 11, 1861 battle of Rich Mountain, WVa. and then went into camp at Beverly, WVa. It was mustered out at Indianapolis, Aug. 2 or 6, 1861.

Johnson, George of Shelby County, Ind., Nov. 21, 1864 private (draftee), Company E, 38th Ind. Infantry Regiment; June 26, 1865 mustered out

38th Ind. Infantry Regiment
January to April, 1865 Campaign of the Carolinas. March 16 Averysboro, N. C. March 19-21 Battle of Bentonville. March 24 Occupation of Goldsboro. April 10-14 Advance on Raleigh. April 14 Occupation of Raleigh. April 26, 1865 Bennett's House and Surrender of Johnston and his army; April 29-May 24, 1865 March to Washington, D.C., via Richmond, Va. May 24, 1865 Grand Review; Moved to Louisville, Ky., June, and mustered out there July 15, 1865.

Nov. 17, 1879 applied for a pension (application #322278/certificate #313071)
Nov. 12, 1916 died at Greenfield, Ind.
NOTE: Pension Index card states he served in Company I, 8th Ind. Infantry Rgt. That is the only inconsistency I found.
ALSO I assume the earliest George could have joined the 38th Ind. Infantry was at Savannah. He was drafted Nov. 21 and the regiment was already on the move from Atlanta to Savannah with Sherman's army which had to contact with other Union forces until it reached Savannah.
