My wife's great-great grandfather, Frank White, was a Lieutenant Colonel with the 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry Regiment. He is mentioned frequently in the book, "Yankee Blitzkreig - Wilson's Raid Through Alabama and Georgia", by James Pickett Jones (1976).

Lt. Col. Frank White personally accepted the surrender of Macon, Georgia on April 20, 1865 at 6 P.M. (under protest by the Confederate commander) - see page 167. There is a Lt. Col. Horace P. Lamson, commander of the 4th Indiana, that is mentioned on pages 31 and 123 (book cites page 124).

The Battle of Columbus (April 16, 1865) is mentioned in Chapter VI, on page 126, "A Most Gallant Night Attack". It states on page 143, "By the evening of April 17, much of Columbus lay in ashes. The thriving factory town would be of little use to the dying Confederacy. Wilson was ready to ride. On the 17th, he received word that Col Oliver LaGranger's Second Brigade had taken West Point. The two forces would join in Macon, and the corps commander wanted to waste no more time than necessary in Columbus."

"Wilson's force had fought its last battle. Although Wilson did not know it, and would not know it until the 19th, Lee had surrendered one week before the night fight at Columbus. By the time he reached Macon, Licoln was dead and Johnston and Sherman had signed an armistice in North Carolina. Some have called the fight for Columbus the Civil War's last battle."
