10th, 15th Indiana - MG Joseph J. Reynolds

Does anyone remember the exploits of the civil war hero, Major General Joseph J. Reynolds, of the 10th and 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment? He first fought at Cheat Mountain with the 10th and 15th Indiana in 1861. In 1862, President Lincoln promoted Joseph J. Reynolds to Major General of the "Army of the Cumberland". He subsequently fought in the Tullahoma campaign, Battle of Hoover's Gap, Battle of Missionary Ridge, and Battle of Chickamauga.

After the Civil War, Joseph J. Reynolds volunteered for the regular Army, with a peacetime rank of Colonel in 1866. In the winter of 1875-1876, Reynolds led an expedition to a hostile Sioux village on Powder River in Montana. He captured Chief Crazy Horse's winter hideout, the village, and a pony herd. But he then withdrew, leaving behind his dead soldiers. Reynold's withdraw led to a court-martial.

Reynolds resigned from the Army in 1877, after 34 years of military service. He enjoyed belated honors, however, in March 1877, being awarded an honorary Brigadier General in the regular Army, as a salute to his meritorious service at Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge.
