He is listed as a private in Company D, 48th Indiana Infantry. His mustering in date was also January 1, 1862 in Goshen, Indiana. The record shows he was 30 years old at the time he joined the army. There is a note on his record that states he was returned to 4th Indiana Battery as a deserter from the same unit May 22, 1862.

His mustering in date with the unit was September 30, 1861 in Indianapolis, IN. There is a note that he deserted from this unit a second time at Nashville on August 25, 1862.
