I have a publication from "History of the Arkansas Valley, CO" dated 1881 found at the Canon City Public Library. It states that Rufus E. Smith, MD "entered the Jackson Medical Institute; remained at this school two years. He then taught school for two years. In the spring of 1862, he joined the Confederate army and after serving one year and a half, he was taken prisoner by the Federal forces and was taken to Fort Morton, IN where he was confined till the close of the war. He then came to Colorado."

His Cmsr shows he enlisted in August 21, 1862 if I understand the muster roll correctly. There are lots of different dates. the last roll said "last paid to Feb 28, 1863" under remarks "deserted June 13, 1863. What about Henderson Hill, were all those POWs listed on a federal register somewhere?
