I read in a book that I no longer have that some Southern Unionists in contested areas were sent north to Indiana and possibly other states during the War.

My NE Alabama Unionist ggg grandfather's Southern Claims Commission papers, which I got last week, include the fact that when his Confederate soldier son came home on leave, he sent the son to Indiana after giving him 80 dollars in gold to get out of the Confederate army.

Does anyone have info about Indiana taking in disaffected Southerners during the War?
