Thanks, Bruce - That covers that real well. However, my great grandfather trained with the 79th Illinois at Camp Terry - Mattoon - and he enlisted 8/28/62. Do you think that was at the same location as Camp Grant? There are nice markers for Camp Grant in Mattoon --- sorta hard to find, but they are very nice. Just wondering........ I can't believe Mattoon would have had two training camps at the same time.
That S.S. Good from Decatur was the first "Colonel" of the 21st and a soldier from the 21st commented when he left the regiment and was replaced with Grant; "We had a Colonel Good and now we have a good colonel."
