The Illinois in the Civil War Message Board

66th Illinois

this regiment was known as Birge's Sharphshooters. They had the Sharps rifle, the best of the day. This was the most traveled of the Civil War regiments having had to go back to Illinois to replenish troops lost due to casualties of War. My Great Great Grandfather was Hiram Pitts Simmons and he joined late in the war, but was in Sherman's "March to the Sea" campaign. He also was in the Grand Procession in Washington, DC before returning to southern Michigan.

Any pictures of Hiram P Simmons would be most appreciated.
