Re: My Civil War Ancestors--help

Thanks BG,
Picture #1) The cases of the pictures vary a bit, both are in brown/dark cases--one much heavier and thicker than the other and this case is of a more rigid material. Hinges are intact, has a simple clasp that fits nicely into the other side, and the case is rather elaborately decorated with some type of symbol resembling a cross in the middle of it. It has a decorated border with scrolls and so forth. The cross is surrounded by many scrolls and everything is raised--rather "fancy" would be the description of the outside of the case. Inside, this one is an oval picture of the soldier, lots of gold looking decorative filigree material surrounding the oval and the oval is also edged in the gold looking filigree material. It shows the soldier only down to his waist. His sleeves are not in the picture. On the opposing side of the picture is green velvet with a decorative scroll like symbol in the center. The soldier in this picture has a round looking hat with a border/edging--the part that sits right on his head. The hat has some kind of symbol dead center of it and then something very shiny in the middle of that--but I can't tell what it is. I've looked at it many times with a magnifying glass. The symbol shows up shiny like the buttons--I can see 6 shiny buttons down the front of his coat--and I think one more below--not as shiny--picture doesn't go quite to his waist. He is holding his gun in his right hand--across his chest--thumb on the hammer--like he's ready to go at it. Shoulders are decorated with flaps (don't know the proper term for these) and the "flaps" also have one shiny button close to his neck.

Picture #2) The case looks wooden with some kind of covering on the outside to look like leather--decorated on both sides with urns with flowers in them and scrolls surrounding that. A small simple hook closes this one. This picture looks more like a small rectangle--not as much gold looking filigree material--but still quite a bit. It has red velvet decorated with feathers and scrolls on the opposing side of the picture. The soldier in this picture has a very simple uniform--4 buttons--but more of him shows. He's sitting in a chair by a small table--which is covered in cloth--left arm on the table--right hand on his thigh.Pants are plain. There are no flaps on his shoulders. The top button of his shirt is right at the very top--collar is round and sits up a bit on his neck. His hat, believe it or not, resembles a cowboy hat--looks like felt of some kind--brim is up slightly--nothing on it that I can see. You can see his face clearly--looks like photographer added a little pink to his cheeks.

Both pictures are good sized.

Francis M was a Wagoner in the 115th and Elijah James was a Corporal in the 41st--don't know if that makes a difference or not.
Thanks vey much for your help. Look forward to hearing from you.
