Re: Illinois at the Battle of Fort Gregg

John: About half way through your magnificent work. I have done extensive research on 23rd Illinois. I am writing a regimental history called "The Harp and the Eagle:The History of Mulligan's Irish Brigade," copyright. A relative, who had already won the Medal of Honor for capturing a Confederate Battle Flag at Fisher's Hill in the Shenandoah, was wounded between the elbow and shoulder "on the glacis" of the fort while carrying the flag of the 23rd Illinois - according to an affidavit by Capt Ryan, his Regimental Commander. Color-Corporal John J. Creed was from County Tipperary in Ireland. He was wounded in both arms by "buckshot and minie ball. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, where they saved his arms. He was never able to work at his profession as a carpenter again. I was also able to discover that according to an Ordnance Report, the 23rd Illinois was issued 4,000 rounds of ammunition for Henry's Repeating Rifles on Apr 2, 1865. Email me if you get a chance.
