I remember reading about those Union outfits at Stones River that had to retire to get more ammo. Maybe I saw something about that when I visited the battlefield a few years back, too. Both sides had trouble keeping ammunition of the calibers that the different companies used throughout the war. At Gettysburg the Yanks had an advantage because they pioneered the use of ammo wagons that they would run right up behind the firing lines and drop off cases of hopefully the right cartidges. They had some horses shot on the first day of the battle doing that, but it seemed to work. I read that in some of the Gettysburg literature.
