I read that book years ago and liked it very much. I am interested in the 30th IL Inf and they were in that battle. Nearly all the letters, diaried, etc I read from the soldiers very very proud of their actions there; it was their first true test of courage under fire. I have looked at the battle in Google Earth and you can locate the state park on the east side easy enough but the west side appears to be a farmfield and I am sure one would need permission to go onto that property. The river has changed over time but no so much that you couldn't get your feet on land that the conflict was on. I have wanted to go there on our way to/from other battlefields for years and it never seems to work out. Soon.
