Re: 1st Illinois Light Artillery, Battery "K"

Rhonda,

Thanks, I am aware of that publication. I posted this message on the Arms & Equipment message board and received an email from one of our contributors. It turns out, the 1st Illinois Artillery, Co. K, was armed with the rare and controversial "Woodruff Gun", a 2-pdr smoothbore gun, which received mixed reviews in combat. In the Sooy Smith expedition the 1st Illinois Artillery, Co. K had 5 of these Woodruff guns and one (1) 12-pdr mountain howitzer. All five (5) of the Woodruff guns were captured by the Confederates in a skirmish just north of West Point, MS, February 21st, 1864.

Thanks for the response.

Jim
