I came across John Degan's tombstone in Jefferson Iowa. On the the stone it said he was in the 64th IL Inf and the US Navy. Looking at the Illinois Project site he is listed as John Deegan from Lockport and in Co. E. Also so says he deserted in 1864. I was wondering how he got in the Navy after deserting.
