One such was Frances Hook (alias Frank Miller) who enlisted in 1862 in the 90th Illinois and served with them until she was captured while foraging in Florence, AL. Wounded while trying to escape, she was imprisoned in Atlanta, then exchanged, and hospitalized in Chattanooga and Nashville. She was "sent north" in June 1864 after her wound recovered sufficiently, having served for almost two years.
