Morris Wetzler of Rock Island County, Ill. enlisted on Sept. 9, 1861 at Chicago as a pvt., Co. G, 37th Ill. Infantry Rgt. and at a later date was transferred to Co. K.
Source Illinois Muster and Descriptive Rolls which also indicates he was born c.1843 in Germany and was single at date of enlistment

His pension index card states he was discharged in January 1864. That may be the date he was commissioned as a 2ndlt. in the U. S. Colored Troops as he is listed as serving in Co. G, 5th Corps de Afrique Infantry Rgt. which was redesignated on April 4, 1864 as 77th U. S. Colored Infantry Rgt. The regiment was used as garrison troops for Ft. St. Phillip and other area around New Orleans, La. Wetzler resigned on April 13, 1864. (Source Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the U. S. Army, part viii)

He applied for a pension on Sept. 29, 1886 (application #586106/certificate #360144) and died Sept. 23, 1907. His widow applied for a pension on Jan. 13, 1911 (application #956033/certificate #729772)

According to an entry on Family Search.org Morris married on July 21, 1872 to Amalia Engle at St. Louis, Mo.
His birthdate is given as March 15, 1842 and born in Saaz, Boehmen Koenigretch, Austria. (Australia may be a transcription error for Austria). He is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Leavenworth County, Kansas
Family Search lists date of death as Sept. 28, 1907 at Chicago
