The 23rd Illinois led by Colonel James A. Mulligan was also called the Irish Brigade, recruited in Chicago.. Mulligan was mortally wounded in action July 24, 1864 in the Shenandoah Valley at the Battle of Kernstown.

My wife's ggrandfather served in the 23rd while my ggrandfather served in the 43rd Tennessee on the opposite side at Kernstown.
