Re: Commander of 123rd Illinois Infantry

James Monroe was boarn about 1830 at Greensburg, Green County, Ky. according to the muster roll for 7th Ill. Infntry Rgt. He was five feet, eight inches tall with grey hair and eyes
According to 1860 census he was a merchant at Mattoon, Ill., married to Mary J. (about 1836 born in Illinois) and had a daughter Margaret born about 1859 in Illinois.

His widow applied for apension on Feb. 1, 1864 (application #44124/certficate #15629); (no date given) his minor child applied for a pension (certificate #140231/certificate #94762)

Mary APPARENTLY married William S. Hinkle who served in Co. D, 1st Ind. Heavy Artillery Rgt. and later as the regiment's quartermaster. Her pension and the minor child's pension is listed as a cross reference on Hinkle's 1897 pension application
