As you say, there is not a lot about him. Here is what I have on him. He was the Colonel of the regiment and was previously a Major in the 7th Illinois Infantry Regiment.He joined the unit at Mattoon Illinois for 3 years on Sep.6,1862 and as you say, he was killed in action at Farmington, Tn on Oct.7,1863.
