Re: Knights of the Golden Circle in Illinois

I thought not from the title.
Less then 10% of the population of Coles Co.and surrounding Co.'s were foriegn born in 1860 compared to 40-50% of Cook Co.(Chicago).It would be a place where the locals it being their husbands, brothers and sons being loaded on the train under duress might get vocal without just as with the influence of the Peace Democrat movement.A spark will ignite a fire. Being a "secret society" these things are hard to prove thus the sensational type literature. Here is a link to another conscription protest in Ohio you might find interesting,Ft.Fizzle.The New York riots are the most heard of but, they happened on a lesser scale throughout the north.

All these secret societies lost steam when it was realized (Rev. Col.Jaquess 73IL.Inf. /James Gilmore,July of 64)reported back the south would fight to the end.The only chance at peace from either sides perspective was victory.
I have been trying to find statistics( I have them somewhere) on just how many in Illinois belonged to these movements vs. statewide population statistics. It was a small percent. From memory the population of the North combined was at 22 million in 1860 with combined Sons of Liberty/etc. estimates at 300-500 thousand or .044% of the population whole. As I said if you were vocal against Federal policy you would be arrested under the guise of subversive societies.Gen Orders #38
I stand to be corrected.
