Re: Knights of the Golden Circle in Illinois

Jay, you are welcome. It is a facinating subject.A rounded look at subversives both Federal and Confederate is ,"Spies and Spymasters of the Civil War",Donald E.Markle.You can probally get throught interlibrary loans if they don't have.I'm in Texas too!
I transcribed some St.Louis newspaper with articles on Bill Anderson.I don't know that much about him.Freemasons were capable of things thought impossible.
The Knights were founded in 1835 by John C. Calhoun,William L.Porcher, and others. Its sole objective was the dissolution of the union and the establishment of a Southern Empire. The word used was empire and not Confederacy. This is around the same time as Abolishionists groups formed in the north. Most think it was George Bickley, a confidence man.It was him that spoke of the Confederacy.
"There is ample and positive proof that the order of the K.G.C. is thoroughly organized in every Northern State as an auxillary to the Southern Rebellion. It has acted here as,Peace Society, the Union Party, the Constitutional Party, the Democratic Society,Club or Association, the Mutual Protection and Self Protection",Secret Auxillary Of The Southern Rebellion,The Continental Monthly Boston,1862.I don't agree but, this is what you find.
