Chris, There are many different scenerios that could have a man from New Jersey in an IL.Regiment.A relative is one.Patriotism was high and people thought the war would be over quickly another. The fall of 1862 was the end of the "rush" to muster. An example might be several Regiments lost there numerical "spot"becaue of massive enlistments and how quickly the state excepted full regiments.Such was the case of the 73rd IL..The 73rd and 72nd mustered on the same date and argued over the fact of who was the first regiment to muster in the fall of 1862 in IL.There was also a contention that the 73rd stole the regimental designation intended for the 114th who didn't have enough men to fill the regiment at that time. Things were hectic to say the least. If that makes sence. He could of been traveling when the 95th was gathering men.Seeing them on a train or Cairo was a port. You might see what this man did for a living via Census records.Maybe a traveling salesman. Some came from out of state because their states rolls had been met and they wanted to fight. There was a call for a specific number of troops and each state had their quota. This is muster records online.Good luck!
