The Eighth was with Croxton after the Wilson corps passed through Elyton, 30 March 1865. Croxton's First Brigade did not rejoin Wilson's corps until 2 May 1865 at Macon, GA. When Wilson was entering Montgomery, the Eighth Iowa was trying to keep from losing too many men while crossing the Sipsey Fork of the Warrior River in Walker County, some 125 miles away. Dyer's Compendium is not accurate on this point.

My point is that the Eighth Iowa Cavalry claimed to have taken at least one flag (the Alabama Secession Convention Flag) to which it manifestly could not have had access. The soldiers credited with the "capture" of this flag were never enlisted in the Eighth Iowa Cavalry.
