The Iowa records say he was a resident of Illinois, born in Indiana, when he enlisted in Iowa.

From the roster of the 7th Iowa Infantry:

COMPANY "I"
Galbreath, John R. Age 26. Residence Mercer County, Illinois, nativity Indiana. Enlisted July 30, 1861. Mustered Aug. 22, 1861. Transferred to Company E Aug. 2, 1861. See Company E.

COMPANY "E"
Galbreath, John. Age 26. Residence Mercer County, Ill., nativity Indiana. Enlisted Aug. 2,
1861. Mustered Aug. 2, 1861. Wounded slightly Nov. 7, 1861, Belmont, Mo. Discharged for
disability July 26, 1862. See Company I.

The Kansas State Historical Society website shows a Civil War veteran named JR Galbreath lived in Louisburg but says he served from Ohio.

The John R Galbreath of the 7th Iowa applied for a pension. The date was 22-FEB-1864
I'll try to learn more.
