Tom, several items that I noticed in the letter. First he states that he was taken to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania prior to going to Fort Delaware. This is an important piece of information. The Confederate prisoners taken during the battle of Gettysburg were taken to Fort McHenry where many of them were transferred to Fort Delaware. Those after the battle who were prisoners on the retreat South were mainly stragglers and or deserters. They were taken to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and then to Philadelphia, Pennsylvaina where many of them were taken to Fort Delaware. Many of them were captured at Greencastle, Pennsylvania which is about five miles North of the Maryland state line. I would guess that is what the Green_____ is. The only thing that does not made sense is the date. June 2, 1863 would be prior to the Gettysburg campaign. Captain Ahil may be Captain Ahl of the 1st Delaware Artillery. He recruited many former Confederates for service in that Union unit.

His CMSR's list him at two different capture sites. They say he was captured at Knoxville, Tennessee on December 10, 1863, and at Gettysburg in July of 1863. In my opinion he was captured at Greencastle, Pennsylvania. Because of what he died of and because of the hard steady march South by Lee it may have been difficult for him and others to keep up especially when the Union Cavalry were nipping at Lee's heals. The Confederate CMSR's also report that he was transferred to Fort Delaware from Philadelphia by Lieutenant Colonel Whipple on July 13, 1863. This again would lean toward his capture during the Gettysburg campaign. The 11th Georgia Infantry was with Longstreet's Corps; Hood's Division; Anderson's Brigade at Gettysburg.
