Re: an effort to return some of the letters

Hello Bill, you don't by any chance live in Florida do you? I have a good friend who I have not talked to in years by your name.
I don't believe any future articles concerning the missing letters appeared in the magazine the Confederate Veteran as I believe the Magazine ended with Volume #40 which would be about 1932. The bulk of the letters were written and received in 1862 and of course Five Forks was in April of 1865. I believe the complete listing of the missing letters can be found at the Virginia Historcial Society in Richmond, Virginia. I also believe you can view them online when going to their website. The whole story about the Camp Chase missing letters involves spying, romance, murder, etc. The man convicted of the murder of Philip W. Porter and his wife, Mr. T. Soke, died while serving time in October of 2008. Philip W. Porter had been the editor of Cleveland's Newspaper the Plain Dealer. Ironically, I had helped my cousin with his paper route back in the early 1960's in delievering the Plain Dealer home to home in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
I'm glad to hear that your ancester made it back home safe and sound.
