A wonderful story! I hope some of the letters were delivered to their owners. In subsequent issues of the Confederate Veteran, were more found mail listings published?
I started to scan the list of soldiers, hoping to find one from my Great-Great grandfather, then I remembered his family's story. Captain John Craig Evans was captured at Five Forks the end of the war, and was sent through Camp Chase on to the officer's prison camp at Johnson's Island. The family thought he had perished at the Five Forks battle, and were startled when he walked through the front door a few months after the conflict was over; they had never received information to the contrary. He had stopped in New York City to obtain a line of credit from antrebellum suppliers, then returned to South Carolina with goods to restock his drygoods store.
