Cathy, It would appear that John Brown was captured at the battle of Bristol,TN on December 14, 1864. He was with the Unassigned Conscripts which means that he was not assigned to a particular unit. Isaac M. Arrants also was this unit and he too was listed as Unassigned although Camp Chase has him being with Johnson's Conscripts. If the later was correct than perhaps the Johnson to whom it was referring to was Confederate General Bushrod Johnson. Arrantrs too was captured on Dec. 14, 1864 at Bristol, TN. It would appear that the 11th Kentucky Cavarly (Union) may have captured both of these men. About 200 Confederates were captured that day. Both of these soldiers were drafted into the Confederate Army hence the name Conscripts. The Confederate Government had three Conscription Acts and it would appear that both of these men fell into the last Act. The last Act conscipted men up to 50 years old. There were also many exemptions such as owning 20 slaves etc. The Confederate Government had not yet assigned John Brown to a military unit although one page on his CMSR's did state he was with the Conscript Guards. The battle of Bristol if we want to call it that was part of General Stoneman's Raid into Virginia. The CMSR's does not state when or where he was conscipted. Most of the Confederate Army was Conscipted by the end of the War. His only fault was that he had not yet been assigned to a unit which was not fault of his own. If he had enlisted on his own accord perhaps he may have had to option to choose his unit. There are many on this site who know far more about the Confederate Conscription laws than myself. Perhaps some of them may be able to voice an opinion.
