All the information I have on James Wesley Thomas is contained in the links and discussion before your query. According to several websites, the Knights of Pythias were chartered by Congress in Washington, DC in 1864. While the sword you have may date before that, it could not have been presented to James W. Thomas, whoever he was, until after that founding date. Sorry I could not be of more help.
