Taken prisoner by Confederate Army

The family story I have is; My GG Grandfather, James Henry Cassady (various sp) was taken prisoner when the Confederate Army took possession of their home and made it their headquarters. They were living in a mansion on a plantation in Chatanooga TN.(possibly employed there, not found in 1860 census) The family never saw their father again. His son hid in a cave behind the home. Some of the family lived in nearby Dade CO GA. That family source only states, the father, J H Cassady, died in the civil war. I don't know if he was a civilian or soldier when taken prisoner. I did find a military record for a James H Cassiday/Cassidy; private, 1st Reg't CO G, GA Infantry (Olmstead)- killed Aug 12, 1863, Battery Wagner, Morris Island South Carolina. I sent for the record, (card #45506743&6853)there is no information to identify this soldier as my GG Grandfather or enlistment record. What could have happened to J h Cassady, would have been taken to the Swim's jail in Chattanogga, is there a record of names? What if he was in the army and exchanged within the 10 day law of taken prisoner, would he been allowed to notify his family? What could have happened to him if he was a civilian, for what reasons would he have been shot...? I appreciate any information/help. Bette
