Rick:

I searched the National Park Service's Index to the Compiled Military Service Records at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm. There are records for 48 men named "William Pate" in Confederate service including those with middle initials. Among these, 12 were from North Carolina and two from Tennessee. I found no Union army enrollments under that name associated with North Carolina or Tennessee Union units. However, there are 22 men by that name listed in Union units from other states, or the Veteran Reserve Corps.

The Fort Delaware Society database contains a record for Private William F. PATE, Company I, 56th Georgia Infantry who enrolled at Villa Rica, Carroll County, Georgia on 10 MAY 1862. He was captured in the Battle of Champion Hill on 16 MAY 1863 and forwarded through Camp Morton to Fort Delaware arriving 9 JUN 1863. He was paroled for exchange on 3 JUL 1863 and delivered to Confederate authorities at City Point, Virginia on 6 JUL 1863. There is no further record of his service in the CMSR.

Hope this helps!
