To expand on Hugh's response, photography was in its infancy during the Civil War and photographs of individuals were expensive (prices ranged from about $4.00--and most (Union) soldiers were being paid about $8.00 per month). The more famous photographers of the era--Matthew Brady and his assistant ?? Gardner mainly focused on taking pictures of generals, battlefields, army manouvers, etc. Photos of individuals were usually purchased by the individual soldiers or their families.
