Re: William Marvel's CSS ALABAMA crew list.

Sometimes it does not pay to "google" one's name on the internet. I am rather distressed to find that my research into the CSS Alabama seems to have left some question of authorship and credit. Let me assert, therefore, that my crew list was not altogether "mine," but a compilation and distillation of numerous lists, starting with a muster roll in the National Archives at Washington. I believe the person who may be referred to as the author of another roster would be Maurice Rigby, of Liverpool. Maurice did me the favor of sharing research with me and showing me around Liverpool in 1993, and he had clearly done a great deal of work on the Alabama crew. I am not aware that our rosters are identical, for I recall that he seemed to credit some crewmen whom I questioned, but I am also sure that he pointed out at least a few crewmen whom I did not know about, and he certainly did provide me with additional information about some whom I already had on my list. He also introduced me to new sources about those men, and showed me some of their graves. I would not hesitate to say that when we first corresponded he knew more about the sailors of the Alabama than I did, and he doubtless still does, especially since I moved on to other non-naval Civil War projects and have not done much subsequent research into the subject.
