On my ancestors Death certificate. It says served in U.S. Marines Aug 12 1864 to Oct 25 1865. Family lore says he was drafted as he stepped off the boat. (Daniel J. O'Connell born in Ireland, age 28-29 when entered marines.) Where do I start looking for info on A posible Marine Draftee. By drafted what did that mean in the civil War? How is the Marines & the Navy related when it comes to info? Is there any info on Irish immigrants being drafted (Is drafter for pay to serve for someone else?
