There is tons of information on the Mendota on the Internet. I have printed out almost all of the messages sent and received by the captain of the ship. In June I am going on a tour of Fort Harrison and plan on seeing the graves of the three crewman who were killed in action. I will get a list of the websites I have found as well as the books I have collected that have information and pictures of the Mendota.

My great-grandfather was a teenager who went into the Navy as a paid substitute. He was born in the Highlands of Scotland and grew up in the poorer part of Manhattan, NYC. On his pension records it shows that he was a landsman. Probably had never been away from home or on a ship before in his life.
