Re: Confederate Navy Engineers and Pilots.

Bruce, yes, I have seen listings of many of the pilots in North Carolina waters. If I recall correctly, some still remained in enlisted positions in the Confederate States Navy, though they were used as pilots, while some held warranted positions. I think that a small number may have also been Northern born, amongst those operating in North Carolina waters. From what data I have gathered so far, it seems that many of the Northern born pilots and engineers were actually operating around the New Orleans and Mobile region, which would be logical, since New Orleans, especially, was a cosmopolitan port, to which many persons with specialised skills, such as pilots and steam boat engineers would have gone to, while operating in their trade. Additionally, I have also noted, from the census records, that many of these Northern born personnel, who eventually entered the Confederate States Navy, had married southern ladies, which would have caused them to settle in the Southern states. However, as at least one Confederate Navy middy had suspected, and stated so in his account published after the war, some of these Northern born pilots may not have fully sided with the south. This was indicated as much in the volume by James Morris Morgan, titled RECOLLECTIONS OF A REBEL REEFER.
