Re: Confederate Navy Engineers and Pilots.

During the Burnside Expedition in eastern North Carolina, the pilots for both sides were locals. Many Northern traders had family members living in eastern North Carolina, looking after the family business interests. New York firms did quite a bit of trading at New Bern before the war, so Burnside had no problem finding Union sailors familiar with the waters or finding local pilots. The pilot wounded aboard the USS Valley City in the battle of Elizabeth City was an Outer Banks native.
