Re: CSS Pontchartrain (Lizzie Simmons)

Thanks for the information. From all of my research at the archives at the Arkansas Historical Commission Archives it seems that the men and some of the cannons from the CSS Pontchartrain were at the battle but the vessel was not there. I have found through additonal research a 5 page letter from Lt Dunnington (Commander Officer of the CSS Pontchartrain) to General Hindman reporting the engagment at St. Charles. The person who is sending it to me states that there is no mention of the vessel in the report or on the attached map. It seems hard to beleive that the CSS Pontchartrain (which was the largest Confederate vessel on the waterways of Arkansas) would have been allowed to escape the White river after the defeat at St. Charles. The Arkansas papers from the time found at the state arcives list the CSS Pontchrtrain at Little Rock and the Maurepas at St. Charles.

Thanks for the information!!!!
