Re: CSS Pontchartrain (Lizzie Simmons)

historicmapworks.com has a perfect map of Little Rock, AR in 1871. It was commissioned by local churches to depict the progress of Little Rock, AR after the American Civil War. Depicted in the map are Union redoubts that were created to protect the city. A major one is two blocks south of Mt. Holly Cemetery. The map also portrays the location of the Union hospitals on the campus of St. Johns Free Mason College. On the North Little Rock side of the map, in the left hand corner, there is a depiction of the Little Rock & Memphis Railroad line. The old line still exists to this day. It is Brother Paul Dr. now today in North Little Rock. The rail line stands out through the paved street in further Northeast Little Rock. That rail line is the same rail line that the Union used to supply the city of Little Rock. Supplies were brought into the town of Argenta, AR, now North Little Rock, loaded onto a ferry and floated across the river onto Ferry St, or Commerce St. Located in the bottom left of the map is a depiction of one long warehouse. It appears in active on the map or abandon, but also looks like it housed a large supply of rail ties. Across from the warehouse/river on the Little Rock side, is McLean St. McLean St., is parallel to the warehouse, that is depicted in the 1871 Little Rock map. This area may have been used as a staging ground for the Confederate armament of the Lizzie Simmons. Thus, it is possible that the remains of the Lizzie Simmons maybe one block over, underneath the base of the Rock Island Railroad bridge. This would be one of the limited areas of the Arkansas River shore line that would be untouched by 20th Century development and would generally remain the same from the 19th Century. I am a civil war buff myself. My ancestor served with 35th N.C. Infantry. He fought at the battle of Antietam in the West Woods. Wounded at Fredericksburg, VA., fought at the battle of New Bern N.C., helped construct defenses of Petersburg, VA. fought at the battle of the Crater. Captured at the battle of Ft. Stedmen during a night raid to escape the siege. Held prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland from March, 22 1865-June 1865. Let me know if any of this is of interest.
