I spent a good deal of time researching these topics in conjunction with my work on "Le Roy Fitch: The Civil War Career of a Union River Gunboat Commander" (McFarland, 2007). Therein we touched upon the role of the army gunboats (especially the Newsboy out of Nashville); the USN tinclads, logistics and convoys, including the building of the four on the Upper Tennessee; the cooperation of Fitch's people with the Mississippi Marine Brigade and Col. Streight's mule brigade; counterinsurgency work against guerrillas and cavalry (like Morgan and Forrest); the Johnsonville debacle, etc. Glad to entertain specific questions.
