Pvt Smith seems to have survived wounded for some time after the first Cold Harbor. This suggests that he might have been taken to Richmond, which was well on its way to being the largest hospital city on earth by this time. He may be among those in Hollywood Cemetery, an enquiry by telephone might get you the information you seek.

John Reekie, a contractor to the Matthew Brady Studio, took piles of images on wet plate of the skeletons removed from the area after the Second Battle of Cold Harbor. The area was not scoured for human remains after the first battle.Giving the remains a close inspection through either enlargement or a good magnifier might reveal some clues to identity. How were those fellows dressed?
