Terry, ther is nothing I have seen to indicate Midshipman Barron was a "brat". The Navy took a great degree of its traditions from the British Navy. While this case is unique because of his age, it was not unusual for promising youth to be so appointed before their teen years. Note he was sent to sea at age eight! And he was apparently competent, as he rose to the rank of Captain. Stan
