Additional to my posting on Beverley Kennon being a Muslim, it has just dawned on me that he obviously converted to Islam while he was serving in the Egyptian Army, under the Khedive, from 1870. I think the most plausible explanation would be that he was born a Christian, but, during his time in Egypt, he converted to Islam, and, on his return to the U.S., he converted back to Christianity. I doubt very much that he was a Muslim at the time of his service for the Confederacy, during the war.
I wonder how many other American officers, who served in the Egyptian Army, from 1870, had converted to Islam?
