Re: "Coal Torpedo" Explosion on the USS CHENANGO

I am working on a historical novel "Admiral's Guard," based on the letters of a young Civil War marine who was guard to Adm. John Dahlgren, Commander,South Atlantic Blockading Squadron 1863-1865. In my research I have found the admiral was deeply concerned about torpedo use by the Confederates. I am working this concern into the story based on the marine's letters in which he mentions the admiral's messages to Secretary Wells regarding such devices. Has anyone come up with any information as to whether or not a coal torpedo WAS used on the Chenango? Thanks for any input.
