Hi,

Out on the Mississippi, the warboats all had bells and whistles. LCDR Fitch often employed the whistles of his tinclad escorts to inform the steamers under his protection of various requirements or needed precautions, maneuvers, etc. The whistle was far more important than the bell out there.
