George- One thing that has cropped up in researching Confederate Naval Construction is that the boilers in the finished product were rarely those in the drawings. This may account for the discrepancy between those planned and the description of the finished vessel.
One problem encountered in construction planning is that an engineer neglected to calculate required steam volume correctly. The C.S.S. Mississippi had to be altered as a result, more hull added to fit the five extra boilers required.
