Dave, thanks for that list, but I was referring to those who were mentioned as being on the CSS ALABAMA. I note that your list of CSMC personnel seems to vary very slightly from that shown on pages 310 and 311, series 2, volume 1, of the ORN. Your John P. Swaroz is shown as Henry Swaroz in the ORN list.
I would like to find out if there were indeed others (with the exception of lieutenant Howell) who served as Marines on the ALABAMA. I suspect that there were, else Beall would not have referred to it as a Marine contingent. We have always believed that Howell was the only Marine who was aboard, but Beall's letter seems to indicate otherwise.
I have the complete deck log of the CSS SHENANDOAH, and it does indicate that one or more enlisted sailors on that cruiser were used, at one time or another, as Marine guards.
