Ferguson's South Carolina battery had been commanded by Capt. Ferguson but had been removed for unspecified reasons. This occurred during the move by the Army of Tennessee from the Atlanta area up into the middle of Tennessee. He was replaced by Captain Rene Beauregard, the son of General P. G. T. Beauregard who lead the battery in the Battle of Franklin and also the Battle of Nashville. The battery joined the army in their rapid retreat from Nashville, through Franklin and down into Alabama and Mississippi. The army paused at Corinth but had to quickly resume their retreat. The artillery batteries of the army were split apart with a group of 14 batteries moving to Mobile Alabama. These batteries were greatly reduced by losses from the Battle of Nashville and the disastrous retreat that followed. Other batteries were reorganized into two artillery battalions for a move from Columbus Mississippi, through Selma Alabama, Macon Georgia to Augusta Georgia. Hear, a few batteries halted from fatigue of men and horses. The two artillery Battalions, Johnston's battalion had the Ferguson's battery in it, continued into North Carolina and arrived at Salisbury NC still commanded by Capt. Rene Beauregard. It was hear that the batteries of the battalions met union cavalry of 2000 men. The confederate artillery pieces were poorly deployed to cover a 4 mile front without the support of any rebel infantry. The fight that followed ended quickly ibn total defeat of the rebel batteries. The heavy losses included the loss of all of the guns and caissons and half of the men. This ended the war service of Ferguson's South Carolina, still commanded by Capt. Beauregard. The survivors of the battery probably dispersed near Salisbury NC.
