Second Company Richmond Howitzers

The diary and papers of Samuel H. Hawes reside at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. Hawes mentions his guns on a few occasions: "5 November 1862, ... I had charge of one section of artillery 6 pdr. guns." and "14 November 1862, ordered to report at Strasburg with two guns (rifle and 6 pdr.)." Around 17 December 1862 appears the following notation: 0 - 320 yards; 1 - 675 yards; 2 - 870 yards; 3 - 1140 yards; 4 - 1250 yards; 5 - 1525 yards (which I suppose is the range per degree of elevation, but for what type of gun?) On 29 February 1864, he writes "Carried two 3 in rifled guns to the field for artillery practice" - they saw real action later the same day.
